Why We Need More Feelings in the Workplace

In the high-paced world of high-performing professionals who are also parents, emotional awareness often takes a back seat. Balancing demanding careers and family responsibilities can lead to a whirlwind of emotions that, if unacknowledged, can impact both personal well-being and professional effectiveness. One mindful practice that can transform this experience is acknowledging your emotions without judgment.

Why Emotional Awareness Matters

Too often I've coached individuals and leaders who choose the path of least resistance (or so they think), and feelings are pushed to the side. A moment soon comes, whether it be due to stress or pent up frustration, and they find themselves in crisis, feeling like they'll explode at any given moment. It's during these moments that people are ready to take action and find a better, and it starts with this.

A significant part of emotional intelligence is recognizing and accepting your feelings. By acknowledging emotions without judgment, you can manage stress more effectively, improve relationships, and enhance your decision-making processes. This practice helps in maintaining a balanced state of mind as we shift from judgement to acceptance, a skill essential for both personal and professional growth.

The Practice: Acknowledge Without Judgment

  1. Pause and Reflect: Take a moment in your day to pause and reflect on what you are feeling. Create a quiet space where you can focus inward without distractions.
  2. Identify the Emotion: Name the emotion you are experiencing. Is it frustration, joy, anxiety, or something else? Recognizing and labeling your emotions is the first step towards understanding them.
  3. Avoid Self-Criticism: Acknowledge your emotions without attaching any judgment or criticism. Remind yourself that it is okay to feel whatever you are feeling. Emotions are natural responses to our experiences.
  4. Understand the Source: Consider what might be triggering these emotions. Understanding the root cause can help you address the source of the emotion, rather than just the symptom.
  5. Practice Compassion: Treat yourself with the same compassion you would offer a friend. Acknowledge that balancing a high-demand career and family life is challenging, and it is okay to have complex emotions.

Implementing This Practice in Daily Life

It's not about letting your emotions control you, it's about using that awareness to help you take control of the experience so you can make informed decisions with clarity. The key to any practice is consistency, so here are key points throughout your day to consider implementing emotional awareness.

  • Morning Check-In: Start your day with a brief check-in to assess your emotional state. This can set a mindful tone for the rest of your day.
  • Midday Pause: Take a short break during your workday to acknowledge how you are feeling. This can prevent emotional build-up and reduce stress.
  • Evening Reflection: Before bed, reflect on the day’s emotions. This can help you process and release any lingering feelings, promoting better sleep and overall well-being.

Incorporating the practice of acknowledging your emotions without judgment can profoundly impact the way you lead and live. By embracing this mindful approach, you cultivate a greater sense of self-awareness and emotional intelligence. This not only enhances your ability to manage stress and make clear decisions but also improves your ability to lead others, both at home and at work.
